Pictures: Matas Drawings

A few days earlier I've found a stack of my old drawings, I've made them in the art school in 1990-1993. I was 16-18 years old at the time and my idols were Salvador Dalí, William Blake and Rembrandt. I had a dream to become a great artist some day...

Audio: Minimal and Blow instruments

What's up with minimal artists and blow instruments samples? Ricardo Villalobos filled his 'Fizheuer Zieheuer' last year with gypsy horn samples, and this summer it's a track from Berlin again - Samim 'Heater' (Get Physical) with harmonica sample.

Video: Midnight Juggernauts - Shadows

Midnight Juggernauts from Melbourne, Australia.
Bit Blondie, bit David Byrne, maybe X-press 2?
Anyway, it's a nice track, I've heard it already a hundred times and just few minutes ago I got the name of the band on Annie Mac's Mash Up.

Video: Exem - Kursiai 97 & Dar Nevelu

I've just found 2 videos of my old band Exem, both of them were made in 1997 (as far, as I can remember) for our album "Stereo". Yep, 10 years have passed and it seems like 20...

Video: Retro TV Logos/Signoffs

Hi all,
I'm back from my vacation, the summer of 2007 is over, and the Grumpy old Raver is grumping again.

This time it's a cool selection of tv production companies logos. Maybe somebody will steal/inspire themselves with retro animation. From the times, when there was no Flash, Photoshop, After Effects or Flame:

Video: I'm not there

Now, this looks interesting - Todd Haynes is directing a movie based on the life of Bob Dylan. The different aspects of Dylans personality is being played by different actors. In the following excerpt, Cate Blanchet is impersonating him (David Cross plays Alen Ginsberg):

Audio: Justice - Essential Selection

Xavier and Gaspard delivered this mix last week on BBC Radio 1, and I'm still wondering if I like or not. Well, I like almost everything they do, but there are few 80s songs in there, that are just bland. Maybe I just have to listen to it a few more times... Anyway, when you have 70 tracks in a 2 hour mix, it doesn't matter much. Have fun:

Video: Peter, Bjorn & John - Young Folks

Aaaah, at last! Ever since I heard this song on Annie Macs Mashup, I was looking for the song id, and here it is. Also, it was used in this unofficial iPhone commercial.

Update: actually, the version I heard on Radio 1 was from Kanye Wests new mixtape. You can get it on I guess i'm floating blog.

Update 2: And there is also a German version made by Nena for the soundtrack of Vollidot:

Meat Beat Manifestos 'Satyricon' LP in 1992 was a turning point for me. It was the moment I've realized, that I'll start making music myself.
Strangely, how MBM sounds modern again:

These Daft Punk helmets are incredible, and it seems they feel pretty comfortable wearing them. You get them for yourself for a the modest price of 65.000$ at Led Effects. They are totally worth it!

Audio: Zhiguli - Distortion Disco Mix

It seems, that nu-rave wave is spreading around the world faster than SARS - now we have a nice Ukrainian addition to all these folks from Paris, London and Vilnius - Zhiguli.

Video: Microsoft Surface

The future of computing is apparently here:

I remember seeing the interview with Jefferson Han from perceptivepixel a few months ago, where he could confirm some interest in his projects from the big players. Somehow I thought it's going to be Apple and not the guys Redmond. Anyhow, it's nice to see something happening there, the windowed GUI is more than 25 years old, and it's definitely time for something new.

On Jeffs website you can find some beautiful abstract visuals controlled by multitouch interface.

Video: Dublicate - Slash Riddim

Here is another Lithuanian act - Dublicate. I've known these guys for a long time: in the 90s Pavlix played in one of the best bands in Baltics - Empti and Genys was a member of a hip-hop project UZI. Few years back they started a new project together - Dublicate. As the name suggests, they are heavily influenced by the dub/reggae culture, although their music goes far beyond that. Very innovative, very talented, very sophisticated.
And these guys certainly can play live:

You can find more videos from their live performances on Dublicates Myspace page.

Video: Jürgen Paape - So Weit Wie Noch Nie

Although it's a relatively old track (published in 2003), it still sounds modern and it gets only better with the time. I guess, these qualities define a 'modern classic'.
I was addicted to this track since 2004, and you can hear it at every party I made in last few years.
I guess, there are still some people, who don't know it, so here it comes:

A short notice: actually, the best version of this track has different vocal sample (by Münchener Freiheit) on it. But because of sample clearance issues, the track was released with a new vocals. You can still hear the original on Kompakt Total 3 compilation or an a highly recommended DJ Kicks by Erlend Øye.

Video: The MisShapes

For the last few months, I was hearing about the MisShapes, and strangely also from European media. So I guess it's not a NY phenomena anymore. Apparently the Generation Y got their own Club Kids.
I hope the music's at least as good as the famous white wall pictures...

Video: Metal on Metal - No Front Teeth

Metal on Metal are some seriously ill guys from Lithuania. Watch out for them this year - there's already their remix of Tim Deluxes 'Let the Beats Roll playing on BBC Radio1. They recently signed to Skint records, so everything's just starting.

It's not a music video per se, but more of live performance of their track 'No Front Teeth'. Notice the crowd reaction...

Also, here some pictures from M.o.M. parties by Tomas Černiševas.
